Looks like the case of Vladislav Klyushin’s arrest in Switzerland and his pending extradition to the US might be at a turning point. This Wednesday, September 29th, the founder and CEO of one of Russia’s best-known cybersecurity companies, Group-IB, Ilya Sachkov (pictured) was arrested on treason charges.
Contemplating this latest bombshell media cites a new piece of information circulating among those in the know. It is speculated that Sachkov could have tipped off the Western authorities about Vladislav Klyushin’s activities and business dealings with Russian government (he developed a media monitoring system “Katyusha” used by the presidential administration). Klyushin was detained in March 2021, after he and his family arrived in Switzerland on a private plane.
Forbes Russia reported that Group-IB CEO Ilya Sachkov, 35, will be detained for at least two months and could be imprisoned for 20 years, if found guilty. Group-IB’s Moscow offices were also raided on Tuesday, though little more is known about why Sachkov has been accused of treason. The TASS news agency in Russia reported he was accused of sharing classified data with foreign intelligence and had denied the charges.
Group-IB said in a statement that it was confident Sachkov was innocent and that cofounder and current chief technology officer Dmitry Volkov would take over the leadership. Its lawyers are examining the allegations made by Moscow’s Lefortovo court on September 28th, a spokesperson said, adding that “Group-IB’s communications team refrains from commenting on the charges brought and the circumstances of the criminal case due to the ongoing procedural activities.”
“All of Group-IB’s divisions will continue operating as usual,” the spokesperson said.
