Attacks on Russian Oil Refineries

Ukraine attacks numerous locations across Russia, utilising a combination of at least 25 drones and 7 missiles: “attempted” armed incursion into Russian territory reported.

These attacks, reportedly resulting in explosions and heavy fires in at least one refinery in Russia, were confirmed by a Russian official.

Throughout the more than two-year-long conflict between the two nations, both Ukraine and Russia have employed drones to strike key infrastructure, military bases, and concentrations of troops.

Recent months have seen Kyiv targeting Russian refineries and energy installations.

Russia’s defence ministry claimed that it had intercepted 25 Ukrainian drones over various Russian regions, including Moscow, Leningrad, Belgorod, Kursk, Bryansk, Tula, and Oryol.

Local Russian authorities also reported assaults on numerous energy facilities.

Ukraine Attacks

Ukraine’s “attempted” attack on Kstovo oil refinery in Russia.

In a statement, the defence ministry described the incident as an “attempted” terrorist attack by the Kyiv regime utilising drones against targets within Russian territory.

Governor Gleb Nikitin of the Nizhny Novgorod region reported the drone strike on a fuel refinery located in the Kstovo industrial zone.

According to Nikitin, the attack caused a fire at the facility, though he did not specify which refinery was affected.

Reports from the state news agency RIA indicated that a special firefighting train was deployed to extinguish a fire at Lukoil’s refinery in Kstovo.

Lukoil, the owner of the refinery, did not provide an immediate response for comment. The NORSI refinery, which is Russia’s fourth-largest, typically has the capacity to process approximately 17 million metric tons of oil per year, equivalent to 340,000 barrels per day.

Information circulating on Russian Telegram channels suggested that a crude distillation unit at the refinery sustained damage and caught fire during the attack.

Additionally, a catalytic cracking unit at the plant had already been shut down in January.

The defence ministry of Russia claimed that Ukraine launched eight RM-70 rockets and one Tochka-U missile towards the Belgorod region, coinciding with reports from Russian war correspondents of an attempted incursion by armed groups into Russian territory.

Andrei Klychkov, the Governor of Oryol region, reported a drone assault on a fuel facility in the area, with emergency services confirming that one petroleum tank caught fire following the attack.

Authorities evacuated at least 17 individuals from high-rise buildings near the site of the drone strike to a temporary accommodation centre.

Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin stated via Telegram that one drone headed towards Moscow was intercepted and downed over the Ramensky district, situated near the capital.
