In his nightly address, on Sunday, Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky called for “a principled response of the international community to these Russian attacks on the Zaporizhzhia NPP, the largest nuclear power plant in Europe.”
The facility has been subject to Russian missile attacks, forcing the closure of one reactor. There was still a risk of radioactive leaks, operator Energoatom warned, adding that “there is a risk of hydrogen leakage and dispersal of radioactive particles. The fire danger is high.”
I spoke today with President of the European Council Charles Michel. I informed him about the situation on the battlefield, about the threat that Russia created by striking at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant. There is no such nation in the world that can feel safe when a terrorist state fires at a nuclear plant. God forbid, if something irreparable happens, no one will stop the wind that will spread the radioactive contamination. Therefore, a principled response of the international community to these Russian attacks on the Zaporizhzhia NPP – the largest in Europe – is needed right now.
Ukraine said on Sunday that renewed Russian shelling on Saturday had damaged three radiation sensors and hurt a worker at the Zaporizhzhia power plant, in the second hit in consecutive days on Europe’s largest nuclear facility.
President Zelensky called Saturday night’s shelling “Russian nuclear terror” that warranted more international sanctions, this time on Moscow’s nuclear sector.
