Concerns Mount Over Russia-Iran Nuclear Collaboration

The United States and the United Kingdom are increasingly concerned that Russia is sharing sensitive information and technologies with Iran, potentially advancing Tehran’s capabilities to develop nuclear weapons.

According to Bloomberg, unnamed Western officials with knowledge of the matter have reported an increase in cooperation between the Kremlin and Iran in recent months, particularly concerning Iran’s nuclear ambitions. This issue was a topic of discussion in Washington this week when UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer met with US President Joe Biden at the White House.

A White House National Security Council spokesperson stated that the Biden administration remains deeply concerned about Iran’s nuclear activities. President Biden has made it clear that the US is prepared to use all elements of national power to prevent any nuclear escalation by Iran.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken, during a recent visit to London, suggested that Russia might be exchanging nuclear technology with Tehran. Blinken mentioned that Moscow had received a shipment of Iranian Fath-360 ballistic missiles. “Russia is sharing technologies sought by Iran – it’s a two-way street – including in the nuclear domain, as well as some space-related information,” Blinken said.

In discussions held in London, Blinken and British Foreign Secretary David Lammy agreed that Iran’s nuclear program has never been as advanced as it is now. This was reflected in a joint statement by the US Department of State published on Saturday, which emphasised the potential threat posed by Iran’s nuclear advancements.

Iran maintains that it does not seek to develop nuclear weapons. However, there are growing concerns that Tehran could pursue the creation of such weapons in response to escalating tensions with Israel.

Foreign ministers of the G7 countries have condemned Iran’s export of ballistic missiles to Russia and Moscow’s procurement of these weapons in a joint statement on Saturday. The ministers described this as a further escalation of Iran’s military support for Russia’s war in Ukraine and demanded an immediate cessation of these activities.
