Dutch riot police concluded a pro-Palestinian demonstration at an Amsterdam university early on Tuesday, employing bulldozers to clear barricades and detaining approximately 125 individuals amid sporadic clashes, authorities reported.
According to statements issued on social media platform X overnight, law enforcement officials indicated that they were compelled to intervene to halt the event and dismantle makeshift encampments erected by demonstrators, who reportedly hurled projectiles and ignited fireworks.
Despite calls from both the University of Amsterdam and the mayor for the protesters to vacate the campus premises, these requests were reportedly disregarded, as per police statements.
Subsequently, with the exception of four individuals, all demonstrators were subsequently released.
The aforementioned four individuals are being detained further on charges related to public violence and disrespect towards an officer.
A police spokesperson disclosed that one officer incurred hearing impairment during the clashes, although the extent of injuries sustained by others remains uncertain.
The University of Amsterdam opted not to provide commentary on the incident. However, protesters had purportedly voiced demands for the institution to sever its ties with Israel.
Police emphasised that their intervention was imperative to restore order, acknowledging the intensity conveyed through circulating social media footage.
Outgoing Education Minister Robbert Dijkgraaf lamented the necessity for police intervention, underscoring that universities serve as forums for dialogue and debate.
Meanwhile, instances of student activism concerning the conflict and academic affiliations with Israel have commenced spreading across Europe, albeit on a smaller scale compared to counterparts in the United States.
Last Friday, authorities in Paris intervened at France’s esteemed Sciences Po university, dispersing student activists who had occupied its premises.
Furthermore, over 100 students are currently occupying Ghent University in Belgium, staging protests both on climate change and in solidarity with Gaza. Their intent is to prolong the demonstration until Wednesday.
