Commenting on Germany’s phase-out of nuclear power on 15 April 2023, energy expert and Bündnis90/Die Grünen MEP Jutta Paulus said:
“The nuclear phase-out is a necessary step towards a secure and sustainable energy supply. Those who loudly demand a continuation of nuclear power are engaging in cheap populism. The operating licence expires on 15 April, and a new licence would not even be possible for the obsolete reactors under international law.
“Even if there were a safe final repository for the next million years; and even if we were not dependent on Russian uranium imports, nuclear power remains an energy-political and economic dead end. Because in any case, the construction of new nuclear power plants takes decades – time that we no longer have in the fight against the climate crisis. Not to mention the cooling problems caused by low water in the rivers, which are already causing major problems for French nuclear power plants. The planned addition of wind and solar by 2030 will provide as much electricity as 30 nuclear power plants – safely, cleanly and cheaply!”
