The event, held in Saint Petersburg, showcased naval vessels from China, Algeria, and India, highlighting Russia’s military ties with these nations. Additionally, representatives from 31 countries, including Azerbaijan, Venezuela, Vietnam, Cuba, Libya, Myanmar, Syria, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates, and South Africa, attended the festivities.

Deputy Defence Minister Alexander Fomin met with Admiral Hu Zhongming, Commander of the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) of China, to discuss further naval cooperation between Russia and China. Fomin also held talks with Admiral Win Thein, Commander of the Myanmar Navy, to explore increased naval collaboration between Myanmar and Russia.
In a related diplomatic effort, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hasan in Kuala Lumpur on 28 July. The discussions centred on enhancing Russian-Malaysian diplomatic contacts.
Naval Parade and Diplomatic Engagements
The grand naval parade in Saint Petersburg served as a platform for Russia to display its naval prowess and strengthen military ties with key non-Western nations. The presence of Chinese, Algerian, and Indian naval ships demonstrates the deepening military cooperation between these countries and Russia.
The attendance of delegates from 31 countries, ranging from the Middle East to Africa and Latin America, further highlighted Russia’s efforts to broaden its diplomatic and military networks. These countries, many of which have strained or ambivalent relations with Western powers, represent a potential bloc that Russia seems keen to consolidate.
