First Confirmed Skirmish Between Ukrainian and North Korean Troops Near Kursk, Say Intelligence Sources

Russia has reportedly formed a “special Buryat battalion” composed of North Korean soldiers, with at least 18 of them already fleeing their posts near the border of Bryansk and Kursk regions in Russia, according to sources within Ukrainian intelligence services.

The incident occurred approximately seven kilometres from the Ukrainian border, where the North Korean troops had been stationed as part of the Russian occupying forces.

The reasons for their sudden desertion remain unclear, and Russian military forces have begun searching for the missing soldiers. Ukrainian intelligence sources indicate that the Russian military is attempting to conceal this information from higher command.

This comes after previous reports that the Russian armed forces had formed a battalion, named the “special Buryat battalion,” consisting of North Korean citizens. The battalion’s estimated strength is around 3,000 soldiers.

While details regarding the role of this newly formed battalion remain scarce, it is believed that they may be deployed for combat missions near the towns of Sudzha and Kursk, close to the Ukrainian border.

The use of North Korean soldiers in the Russian military highlights the Kremlin’s expanding military collaborations with Pyongyang, following recent diplomatic engagements between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un.
