Ukrainian Drones Destroy Major Russian Missile Depot in Toropets, Tver Oblast

On the night of 17-18 September 2024, Ukrainian special forces executed a successful drone strike on a large Russian Defence Ministry warehouse in the town of Toropets, Tver Oblast. The facility, reportedly under the control of the Russian Ministry of Defence’s Main Missile and Artillery Directorate, housed critical military supplies, including missiles and artillery ammunition.

The warehouse targeted in the operation was a crucial facility for Russia’s missile storage, reportedly containing missiles for the Iskander and Tochka-U tactical missile systems, guided aerial bombs, and other artillery ammunition. These are key components of Russia’s missile capabilities, which have been used extensively during its military operations in Ukraine.

According to a source from Ukraine’s Security Service (SSU), the strike was a coordinated effort involving the SSU, Ukraine’s Defence Intelligence (DIU), and Special Operations Forces (SOF). This joint operation exemplifies the high level of coordination and planning among Ukraine’s military and intelligence units.

The impact of the strike was immediate and significant. An explosion of enormous magnitude followed the drone assault, reportedly covering an area six kilometres wide in flames. This led local authorities to initiate an evacuation of the surrounding population.

A Blow to Russian Military Capabilities

Ukraine has consistently aimed to degrade Russia’s military capability by targeting supply depots, transportation hubs, and other critical infrastructure supporting the war effort. This latest drone strike is seen as part of a broader strategy to limit Russia’s missile potential, which is crucial in the ongoing war.

An SSU source emphasised the significance of the strike, stating that the Ukrainian defence forces are “methodically reducing the enemy’s missile potential, which it uses to destroy Ukrainian cities.” The source added that the campaign to disrupt Russia’s military supply chain would continue, with similar strikes planned against other Russian military installations involved in the war.

Russian Defence System in Question

This is not the first time Ukrainian forces have struck deep within Russian territory. However, this particular attack may raise questions regarding the security of Russia’s military storage facilities, as the site in Toropets was previously considered to meet high international safety standards. Back in 2018, the Russian Ministry of Defence stated that the Toropets warehouse, along with other integrated storage sites, had been constructed to shelter missiles and ammunition from external threats, while also ensuring fire and explosion safety. Each of these storage facilities was reportedly capable of holding up to 240 tonnes of munitions.

The fact that a drone strike was able to cause such extensive damage at a site designed to meet stringent safety standards will likely prompt further scrutiny of the effectiveness of Russia’s defensive measures. It also raises broader concerns about the vulnerability of Russia’s military infrastructure in the face of increasingly sophisticated Ukrainian drone capabilities.

The Role of Drone Warfare

Drones have become a key element of modern warfare, and their role in the Ukrainian conflict is particularly noteworthy. Ukraine has utilised drones for reconnaissance, surveillance, and offensive operations, often targeting high-value military assets deep within Russian territory. The precision of these strikes has been a key factor in disrupting Russia’s military operations and supply chains.

The Ukrainian military has continuously developed its drone capabilities, and this most recent operation is evidence of its growing effectiveness. The successful strike on the Toropets facility not only disrupts Russia’s missile stockpile but also sends a strong message about Ukraine’s ability to penetrate Russian defences, even at sites far from the front lines.
