Severe Flooding in Poland Leads to Further Casualties

In recent hours, Polish authorities have confirmed the deaths of two more individuals due to the flooding that has severely affected the southwestern region of the country. This brings the total number of confirmed fatalities in Poland to seven.

According to the Polish Press Agency (PAP), in the Lower Silesian Voivodeship, specifically in the town of Lądek-Zdrój, rescue teams discovered the body of a man inside a vehicle. Initial investigations indicate that the man was not a local resident. In a separate incident in the same voivodeship, police found another man’s body on the riverbank in the town of Stronie Śląskie.

Local emergency services spokesperson Wioletta Martuszewska reported that the area around the incident in Stronie Śląskie was secured by police. A prosecutor and an investigative team are currently conducting procedures to establish the identity of the deceased man.

The flooding in southwestern Poland has been severe, with the recent fatalities marking the sixth and seventh confirmed deaths in the past few days. The disaster has prompted significant disruptions in the region, affecting daily life and infrastructure. In response to the crisis, educational activities have been suspended in four affected voivodeships to ensure the safety of students and staff.

The Polish government, recognising the severity of the situation, has declared a state of natural disaster in the affected areas for the first time. This measure aims to mobilise resources and coordinate efforts to manage the ongoing crisis and provide relief to the affected populations. The declaration of a natural disaster allows for the allocation of additional emergency services, resources, and funding to assist in rescue operations and recovery efforts.

The flooding in Poland is part of a broader pattern of severe weather affecting parts of Europe. In addition to the situation in Poland, other countries, including Austria, Hungary, and Slovakia, have also experienced significant damage and casualties due to flooding.
