Washington Acts to Prevent ISIS Resurgence in Post-Assad Syria

President Joe Biden has announced that the United States conducted airstrikes against Islamic State (ISIS) targets in Syria to prevent the group from exploiting the power vacuum following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime. Speaking from the White House on Sunday evening, Biden described Assad’s downfall as a pivotal event, while warning of significant risks in the region.

A Strategic Shift in Syria

Biden characterised the ousting of Assad as a “fundamental act of justice” and expressed hope for a more free and democratic future for the Syrian people after decades of oppressive rule. However, he emphasised the uncertainties that now loom over the region.

“This is a moment of risk and uncertainty,” Biden said, highlighting the need to prevent extremist groups like ISIS from regaining strength amid the ongoing instability. “We are fully aware that ISIS will attempt to exploit any vacuum to rebuild its capacity. We will not let that happen.”

To that end, U.S. forces carried out a series of precision airstrikes on Sunday, targeting ISIS camps and fighters in Syria. According to the president, the strikes were aimed at disrupting the group’s operations and eliminating its ability to regroup.

Tracking Assad and Regional Implications

While the exact location of Assad remains unknown, Biden noted reports suggesting that the former Syrian leader may be seeking refuge in Moscow. The president also highlighted the weakening of Assad’s international backers—Russia, Iran, and Hezbollah—due to coordinated actions by the U.S. and its allies.

“For the first time, they can no longer shield Assad’s regime,” Biden stated, attributing the shift in the Middle East’s power dynamics to a recalibrated U.S. strategy. “Our approach has changed the balance of power in the region.”

Vigilance Towards Rebel Groups

Biden also acknowledged the complex dynamics surrounding Syrian rebel groups that contributed to Assad’s downfall. While some of these factions have been instrumental in dismantling the regime, the president cautioned that several have a history of terrorism and human rights violations.

“Make no mistake, some of the rebel groups that defeated Assad have a grim record of their own,” Biden said, adding that the U.S. would remain vigilant. He recognised that some factions are now projecting a more constructive stance but stressed that their actions, not just their words, would be scrutinised.

“As they assume greater responsibilities, we will evaluate them based on their deeds, not just their rhetoric,” Biden concluded.

The collapse of Assad’s regime marks a critical juncture in the Syrian conflict, with implications that extend far beyond the country’s borders. The U.S. airstrikes signal Washington’s intent to maintain a strong presence in the region, both to counter terrorism and to influence the post-Assad reconstruction phase.
